Magnetic drive pumps vs Mechanical seal pumps

12/09/2025

Mechanical seal pumps: a conventional solution

A mechanical seal pump uses a sealing system between the rotating shaft and the static pump casing to contain the fluid. This seal typically consists of two rings that require flushing to lubricate the sealing faces and prevent localized heat build-up. Seals are usually flushed either by the pumped fluid itself or, when necessary, by an external clean liquid.

  • Advantages: initial investment costs may be lower. Mechanical seal pumps are suitable for a wide range of applications involving non-aggressive fluids (e.g., clean water, non-corrosive or non-volatile liquids) and high-temperature operations;

  • disadvantages: by design, the seal is a wear component. Continuous contact with the fluid leads to gradual degradation, requiring regular maintenance. While minimal, there is a risk of leaks or seepage over time.

Which one to choose? A strategic decision

Choosing between the two technologies is, ultimately, a strategic decision that goes beyond technical specifications. It involves evaluating the entire lifecycle of the investment and the operational activities required over time.

Mechanical seal pumps are the ideal solution when handling non-hazardous or non-volatile fluids, especially when a lower initial investment is a key consideration.

However, when dealing with toxic, corrosive, or highly volatile liquids, magnetic drive pumps are the most suitable choice. Their hermetically sealed design ensures maximum safety by eliminating any risk of leakage.

The critical role of construction materials

The synergy between pump design and the materials used in its construction should not be underestimated.

  • Polypropylene (PP): a versatile and cost-effective material, compatible with a wide range of acids and bases. In ARGAL PUMPS, we use reinforced PP, which offers enhanced mechanical strength and stability, making it ideal for more demanding industrial applications;

  • carbon-filled ETFE: this material combines excellent chemical resistance with increased electrical conductivity, making it particularly suitable for use in potentially explosive environments.

Beyond the product: ARGAL PUMPS technical consultancy

Every plant has unique requirements. One of our key strengths is having an in-house technical team a valuable advantage. Each project is customized and managed step by step, with constant support throughout the process.

Together with our sales team, we conduct a detailed analysis of the pumping conditions and the fluid characteristics.

This consultative approach allows us to design and configure the most efficient, safe, and reliable solution  fully customized to meet even the most demanding specifications.
